Res 823-52 RESOLUTION NO. 82~ OF THE CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA WHEREAS, there is presently being constructed within the City of Delray Beach, Florida a new modern four-lane bridge known as the "Atlantic Avenue Bridge" and ~HqEREAS, the present plans for construction of the approaches to said bridge provide for widening of the thoroughfare to conform with the four-lane bridge crossing, and installation of sidewalks and storm sewers, said approaches reaching approximately from the intersection of Atlantic Avenue on Palm Avenue on the west to Venetian Drive on the east; and ~E~EP~AS, there will thereby be left fifteen hundred feet~ of Atlantic Avenue, lying between U. S. No. 1 and Ocean Boulevard, unimproved, narrow and with poor drainage and sidewalk facilities, and ~HE~, Atlantic Avenue is the main business thoroughfare of the City of Delray Beach and is the connecting link between U. S. No. 1 and A1A (Ocean Boulevard) and should be made uniform with the present improvements connected with the new Atlantic Avenue Bridge and its approaches, and WHE~, the improvement of the additional fifteen hundred feet aforesaid could be effected now while the new bridge is under construction and in connection with the already planned bridge approaches so as not to interfere with traffic business after completion ~_~ opening of the new Atlantic Bridge this Fall, and ~tEREAS, the further improvement of the said fifteen hundred feet along Atlantic Avenue could be done at the present time at a much less cost to the State, County and City if a contract were let for said improvements simultaneously with the planned approaches for the bridge now being constructed, and WHEREAS, the City of Delray Beach is one of the fastest growing tourist, agricultural and flower growing communities in the State of Florida, serving more than twenty-five thousand people during the months of November to June of each year, and is greatly in need of these improvements along this main traffic artery, leading from State Highway No. 1 to Ocean Boulevard. I NOW, THEP~FORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City ~uncil of the City of Delray Beach, consisting of five members, as follows: 1. That the State Road Department at its annual meeting in Janua~j, 1952 appropriate funds for the construction, in 1952, of improve- ments along Atlantic Avenue from U. S. Highway No. 1 to Ocean Boulevard, such improvements to consist of new pavement, sidewalks and storm sewers to conform with and be uniform ~ith the construction of the Atlantic Avenue Bridge and its approaches. 2. That a contract for said proposed improvement along the aforesaid portions of Atlantic Avenue be let at the same time as a contract is let for the approaches to said bridge, and that in the letting of said contract, a provision be made that all of the work along Atlantic Avenue shall be completed by the contractor at or about the same time as the new Atlantic Avenue Bridge is completed. 3. That this request is only for approximately fifteen hundred feet of additional new construction and is justified in view of the need to the area, and is further justified in view of the great saving which would enure to the State, County and City by making this additional construction simultaneously with the improvement of the Atlantic Avenue Bridge. 4. That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Chairman of the State Road Department, Honorable Alfred A. McKethan, and to the Honorable Merrill P. Barber, member of the State Road Department for the Fourth District and to the Board of County Commissioners, Palm Beach County, Florida.
