Res 174 ??HEREAS, The Federal Government did cause to be widened the Florida mast Coast Canal through the Cit~ of Delray Beach, Florida, and in the widening of said canal did excavate and take away the dikes and canal banks along said canal; and ¥~HERE~S, ~y the removal of said dikes and canal banks, and b~ the deepe~ing of said canal, has caused the waters of said canal to rise at high tide, so as to flood the lands on both sides of said canal, causing great damage to the property owners along said canal; and ?fHEREAS, by the flooding of said lan~s along said canal, d~mage has been done to nursery trees and palms, low places being filled with brackish water, and causing the breeding of mosquitoes and sand gnats i~ great number; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By t~e City Council of the City of Delr~y Beach, Florida, that the Federal Government be required to take immediate steps to fill in the low lands adjoining the Florida East Coast Canal to such an extend as to make sai2 lands useable and to fill i~ ti~e lo-~~ places on said lands so as to'stop the breeding of sand gnats and mosquitoes, through the City of ~elray Besc~, and its immediate vicinity; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That in the event the Federal Government will not fill in these low lands which are now flooded at high tide, due to the deepening and widening of said canal, and the removal of the dike or embankments which were along said canal, prior to the widening and deepening of the sa~.~e, that cana~ said dike or/bank be replaced by the Federal Government in its former heigh~hand width so as to hold the water of said canal within its true boundaries, thereby eliminating the flooding of the adjoining lands along said canal, which lands at this time are of no use or benefit to the owners, and the nursery trees, palms and plants, and the farmin~ lands have been ruined by the overflowing of said lands by salt water, and are now infested by mosquitoes and sand gnats in great numbers to the detriment and health of the citizens of the City of Delray Beach and immediate vicinity. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Engineers, Congressman J. Mark Wilcox and Senators Claude Pepper and C. 0. Andrews.
