MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Commissioners FROM: Louie Chapman, Jr., City Manager DATE: January 9, 2014 SUBJECT: AGENDA ITEM WS.1 - WORKSHOP MEETING OF JANUARY 14, 2014 PRESENTATION ON SEA LEVEL RISE AND STORM SURGE ITEM BEFORE COMMISSION Nancy Schneider, MBA, MA, will give a presentation on the Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge. COASTAL HAZARDS ADAPTATION FLAN lea Level Rise and Storrs Surge Delray Beach City Commission Delray Beach, FL .January 14, 2014 Presented by Nancy Schneider MBA, MA Agenda Resilient Community Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge Definitions Projections Impacts Our Allies and Partners Tools and Best Practices FEMA CRS -Flood Insurance Biggert- Waters Act The Plan -Our Road Map. i 2050 sea level 2030 2 A Resilient Community- What does it take? The ability to not only bounce back, but "bounce forward" - to recover and at the same time to enhance the capacities of the community to better withstand future stresses. Due to climate change and sea level rise, assets with multi- decadal lifespans will be exposed to weather events more extreme and less easy to predict than ever before. Building codes and zoning need to plan for changes. Not just the built environment, but resilience on the societal level also. 3 L E J LL AS 7+ CD CD CD CD CD CD CD CD CD X7 006 I I :, 0 U i rd U N 0 N z ' s i N C) 4-J rd L 4-J CD rd C) L > rd ( V rd W O r) O (n O C) O 'L — O L rd 4-J F— (v V) V Q c O O C) N4-J C) s ._ = u C) ._ O C) 4-J ._ V) C) z C) L E J LL AS 7+ CD CD CD CD CD CD CD CD CD X7 006 I I :, 0 U i rd U N 0 N z ' s i N O u O V) .- V) rvC i — O (3) • — > 4-J 0 moon V J O L Ln C 4J L a-J •- LL ZD AM (la-91) aSIA 'ana1 eaS rn N L Z 0 rq LLI Ln Li ccc O q E iE liF1 J2 0 ru t Ln iA ut (11 n o a u x 0 ao N x o nn r r4 1:_4 say)ui) GSId 1ana1 eaS 0 LD rq Ln rl 0 N rn rq N 0 rH 0 rIA 0 N .3 .13 O O M (4,.o O O N N 4J > 4J — O O s s V V N I I M a s 0 cn R 0 AW CD J r I a C O W C L s V C a C C U A L W ' O a C i 0 W O 'Q s a, Z0 Ow O C J m E C V W ra V J C m L a 0 V C fQ L a O J O to 1 C J C ca O *; L o w L oa v _O p- _ J V (A J w p1 L C O C^ O = 1p O a a L E o a V a g 'V C w _O O V H a0•+ 'a j = V m = o a 0— (7 u Lm a Ca*; L.
