Res 77-05 (' ~'\ RESOLUTION NO. 77-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING JAMES "JIMMY" MIHORI AND CHIEKO MIHORI FOR THEIR YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO SISTER CITIES OF DELRA Y BEACH AND THE CITY OF DELRAY BEACH. WHEREAS, Jimmy and Chieko Mihori have actively promoted relations between Japan and South Florida for almost 50 years; and WHEREAS, Delray Beach's Sister Cities relationship with Miyazu, Japan was established in 1977, and Jimmy and Chieko Mihori were founding members of the Sister Cities Organization, and Jimmy has served on the board of directors of the Sister Cities Committee since its inception; and WHEREAS, our relationship with Miyazu would not exist today but for Jimmy and Chieko Mihori's efforts to nurture the relationship. Over the years, Jimmy has been our "voice" with Miyazu and has traveled to Miyazu over a dozen times to act as translator for official visits from Delray Beach, often accompanied by Chieko; and WHEREAS, our high school student exchange program has flourished due to Jimmy Mihori's diligence coordinating travel arrangements, assisting with planning home stays for Japanese visitors, and preparing the students with culture and language classes; and WHEREAS, in 1996, Delray Beach was one of three cities in the United States chosen to host a group of nine college-age students from Japan on a good-will mission sponsored by the Crown Prince of Japan. Jimmy Mihori was instrumental in working with the Japanese Consul Genetal in Miami to assist in Delray Beach being selected as one of the host cities; and WHEREAS, in addition to being active with our Sister Cities Program, Jimmy and Chieko Mihori were also founding members of the Japan/American Society of South Florida, as well as the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach; and WHEREAS, Jimmy Mihori is also active in South Florida in helping business executives prepare for doing business or travel to Japan by training staff about how Japanese business culture differs from that in the United States; and (' ~"'\ WHEREAS, Chieko Mihori is also active in South Florida as the Director of the Sogetsu Ikebana Florida Branch, and she has received many awards for her work and teaches the art to others. She teaches Ikebana, the tea ceremony, and traditional Japanese dance at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens; and WHEREAS, Jimmy Mihori was recognized for his contributions to Japanese-American relations by the Emperor of Japan in December, 2003, when he received the "Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Rays" medal, the highest civilian award given to Japanese who live outside of Japan; and WHEREAS, Chieko Mihori was recognized for her contributions to Japanese-American relations by the Foreign Minister of Japan in March, 2004, when she received the "Commendation in Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the US-Japan Relationship". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DELRA Y BEACH, FLORIDA, THAT: Section 1. The City Commission of the City of Delray Beach hereby recognizes and commends Jimmy and Chieko Mihori for 50 years of dedicated public service. Section 2. The Delray Beach City Commission hereby expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to Jimmy and Chieko Mihori for promoting goodwill and friendship between the United States and Japan.
