WITH MINOR CORRECTIONS, IT WAS REGULARLY MOVEO. SECONDED AND CARRIED THAT THE "INUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF NOVEMBER 24 AND THE SPECIAL MEETINGS OF DECEM8ER 1ST AND 5TH BE APPROVED AS CORRECTED AND READ. A LETTER FROM PETER V. GRUBBS ENQ.UIRING AS TO THE ASSESSMENT TO BE PLACEO AGAINST HIS PROPERTY FOR THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENT OF GLEASON STREET WAS READ, AND THE CLERK IHSTRUCTED TO REPLY TO SAME. THE CLERK PRESENTED A REQ.UEST FROM JAMES KOINIS OF FT, LAUDER- DALE, FOR LICENSE TO OPERATE A POP-CORN WAGON ON THE OCEAN BLVD. IT WAS W.OVED BY MR. SABATH THAT THIS PERMISSION 8E NOT GRANTED, IT BEING THE COUNCIL'S OPINION THAT SUCH BUSINESSES SHOULD aE PROHIBITED ON THE PUBL I C R I GHT-OF-WAYS AND STREETS OF THE CITY. ~lR. THE CITY CLERK REPORTED THAT COMPLAINT HAD BEEN MADE ABOUT THE BRUSH AND DEAD PINE TREES WHICH HAD BEEN DEPOSITED DN A VACANT LOT OPPOSITE THE REDMOND COTTAGE ON SALINA STREET. MR. NOWLIN ALSO REPORTED THAT CONSIDERABLE DEAD BRUSH HAD BEEN STREWN ALONG THE RAILROAD, OPPOSITE THE GERMANTOWN ROAD. BY THE RAILROAD COMPANY WHO HAD CUT DOWN THE TREES AND LEFT THEM LYING THERE~ HE SAID THIS COULD REOILY BE BURNED. MR. SCOTT REPORTED THAT COMPLAINT HAD BEEN MADE ABOUT VINCH GIARDANO'S LOT ON THE BEACH, WHICH WAS OVERGROWN WITH WILD UNDERBRUSH. No ACTION WAS TAKEN ON ANY OF THE COMPLAINTS BUT IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT MR. BAKER DISPOSE OF WHATEVER DEBRIS POSSIBLE DURING THE CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN. { THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS PRESENTED AND MR. HE DEEMED IT INAnVISABLE TO RE- CORD THE HOFMAN DEEDS FOR ONLY A HALF INTEREST AND RECOMMENDED THAT WE WAIT UNTIL DEED IS SECURED FROM THE MOORES ALSO. , COUNCILMAN MILLER REPORTED THAT A COMPROMISE PROPOSITION FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF S. E. FIRST STREET, BETWEEN THE DIXIE AND FEDERAL HIGHWAYS; HAD BEEN PRESENTED TO THE PROPERTY OWNERS ABUTTING THEREON. AND THAT MRS. BROWN AND DR. LOVE SEEMED DISPOSED TO ACCEPT SAME BUT MR. SCHRADER HAD REQ.UESTED THAT ACTION BE DEFERRED FOR A WEEK OR TWO AS HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT HAVE STILL ANOTHER PLAN TO OFFER. MR. MILLER ADVISED JOE GWYNN, WHO HAD EN~UIREO IN REGARD TO SAME, THAT HE WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER WHICH HE FELT WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY. THE CHURCH, AND OTHER PROPERTY OWNERS, BY NEXT COUNCIL MEETING , MR. SCOTT SAID HE HAD INVESTIGATED THE MATTER OF INSTALLING A STREET LIGHT AT THE CORNER OF N. W. FIRST AVENUE AND THIRD STREET BUT DID NOT RECOMMEND IT. HE SAID DR. VOGLER HAD STATED HE WOULD JUST AS SOON BE WITHOUT IT. 1 THE MAVOR REPORTED COMPLAINT HAD ALSO BEEN MADE THAT THE FLASHING SIGN AT BARRON'S GRILL KEPT NEIGHBORING RESIDENTS AWAKE. BUT THIS BEING IN A BUSINESS DISTRICT. MEMBERS. EXPRESSED THEMSELVES AS DOUBTFUL THAT ANYTHING COULD BE DONE TO PROHIBIT SUCH ADVERTISING. COUNCILMAN JACOBS REPORTED THAT CITIZENS WERE REQ.UESTING THAT THE RAILROAD WATCHMAN BE PUT BACK ON HIS FULL SCHEDULE OF HOURS SINCE TRAIN, AUTO AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC HAD INCREASED SO MUCH IT WAS FELT THIS EXTRA PROTECTION WAS NECESSARY. ffiS:THEREFORE MOVED THAT THE RAILROAD BE RE~UESTEO TO PUT THE WATCHMAN BACK ON HIS FULL WINTER SCHEDULE OF HOURS. MR. MILLER SECONDED THE MOTION ANO'ON ROLL CALL THE VOTE WAS AS FOLLOWS: MR. HILL YES, MR. JACOBS YES, MR. MILLER YES. MR. SABATH YES, MR. SCOTT YES. THE MOTION CARRIED. , MR. MILLER SAID THERE WAS ONE VERY BAD TRAIN CROSSING IN TOWN, AT EIGHTH STREET AND THE DIXIE HIGHWAY, DELIOA PARK, WHERE THE PLANK CROSSING CONSTRUCTED BY THE RAILROAD COMPANY WAS NARROWER ~HAN THE STREET PAVING, AND THAT A DEEP DITCH EXISTING ALONG THE RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY AT THIS POINT CONTRIBUTED STILL MORE TO HAZARD OF SAID INTERSECTION. HE THEREFORE MOVED THAT THE RAILROAD COMPANY BE COM- MUNICATED WITH AND ASKED TO PUT THE CROSSING INTO SAFE CONDITION IM- MEDIATELY. MR. JACOBS SECONDED THE MOTION, WHICH CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY ON ROLL CALL. : MR. JACOBS WAS ASKED HOW THE SE~ER REPAIR WORK WAS PROGRESSING AND HE STATED HE BELIEVED MR. BAKER AND THE CITY ENGINEER HAD A RECOM- MENDATION TO MAKE IN THIS REGARD. IT WAS REPORTED THAT SINCE THE ICE- PLANT HAD STARTED FULL TIME OPERATION AGAI.N THE OLD COMPLAINT. OF OVER- FLOWING SEWERS IN THAT LOCALITY WAS BEING. RENEWED. IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY MR. CROMER THAT THE CITY REPAIR THE OLD SIX-INCH SEWER LINE RUNNING 1',: i ',_ 1865 DECEMBER 8. 1941 DIRECTLY FRGM THE ICE-PLANT TO THE CANAL. SO THAT THIS MIGHT BE AVAILABLE TO CARRY OFF THE DRAINAGE FRGM THE PLANT. AND THUS RELIEVE THE CITY'S GVER-TAXEO SANITARY SEWER LINE. MR. JACOBS AGREED TO LOGK INTO THE MATTER TO SEE IF ANY AGREEMENT EXISTED BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE ICE-PLANT WITH REFERENCE TO THIS OLD SEWER LINE BELONGING TO THE ICE PLANT, AND ARRANGE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AND PUT INTO USE AS RECOM- MENDED BY THE CITY ENGINEER. UPON RECOMMENDATION GF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE STREET COMMITTEE. IT WAS MOVED BY MR. HILL THAT N. E. 6TH STREET ABUTTING ON LOTS II AND 12 BLOCK II DEL-IDA PARK, BE WIDENED AND RE-SURFACEO. MR. SABATH SECONDED THE MOTIGN, WHICH ON ROLL CALL CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. , COUNCILMAN MILLER REPORTED THAT ELTON HARVEL NEEDED SOME ROCK FOR A CONTRACT HE HAD IN LAKE WORTH AND WANTED TO BUY IT FROM THE CITY AND HAD AGREED TO DIG THE CITY 75Q YAROS OF ROCK IN PAYMENT OF THE 500 YAROS OF ROCK HE PROPOSES TO PURCHASE. THE MEMBeRS CON- SIDERED THIS A FAIR DEAL, AND IT WAS ACCORDINGLY MOVED BY MR. HILL THAT THE STREET COMMITTEE BE AUTHORIZED TO MAKE A TRADE WITH ELTON HARVEL. SELLING HIM 500 YAROS OF ROCK IN EXCHANGE FOR THE DIGGING OF 750 YOSt AT SUCH TIME AS THE CITY MAY DESIGNATE. MR. HARVEL FUR- THER AGREED TO PAY A CHECKER $2.50 A DAY TO CHECK THIS 500 YAROS OF ROCK AS IT IS BEING LOADED. MR. SABATH SECONDED MR. HILL'S MOTION, WHICH CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY ON ROLL CALL. ( , MR. SABATH BROUGHT UP THE SUBJECT OF A SALARY RAISE FOR VICTOR CROFT. STATING THAT HE WAS WORTH A GREAT DEAL MORE TO THE CITY THAN HE WAS GETTING. AND MOVED THAT HEBE RAISED TO $100.00 PER MONTH. AFTER SOME FURTHER DISCUSSION AS TO THE AMOUNT OF RAISE ADVISABLE, MR. SABATH'S MOTION WAS FINALLY SECONDED BY MR. HILL AND ON ROLL CALL THE VOTE WAS AS ~OLLOWS: MR. HILL YES. MR. JACOBS YES. MR. MILLER YES. MR. SABATH YES, MR. SCOTT YES. THE MOTION CARRIED. MR. SABATH REPORTED THAT THE YACHT/BASIN IMPROVEMENT WAS PRACTICALLY COMPLETE EXCEPT FOR POSSIBLY A DAY'S WORK HOOKING UP LIGHTS. AND THAT SE~ERAL OF THE BUSINESS MEN HAD COOPERATED MOST GENEROUSLY IN THIS IMPROVEMENT. SAVING THE CITY EXPENSE BY DONATIONS OF LABOR AND MATERIAL. HE RECOMMENDED THAT LETTERS OF THANKS BE SENT TO THE FOLLOWINQ: ROBERT BLAKE - FOR SUPPLYING SKETCH OF THE TELEPHONE BOOTH. JOE PRIEST CEMENT FLOOR IT WAS ACCORDINGLY MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED THAT THE CITY CLERK BE INSTRUCTED TO WRITE LETTERS OF APPRECIATION TO THESE VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS FOR THEIR COOPERATION IN THIS WORK. THE MAYOR BROUGHT UP THE MATTER OF WAGES PAID THE CO~OREO . 1.866 DECEMBER 8. 1941 , LABORERS EMPLOYED BY THE CITY. STATING THAT WITH RISING LIVING COSTS, HE DID NOT SEE HOW THESE MEN LIVED ON THE WAGES PAID THEM. AFTER DISCUSSION, IT WAS MOVED BY MR. MILLER THAT THE COLORED HELP BE RAISED TO 30 CENTS PER HOUR, BEGINNING DECEMBER 6TH. MR. SABATH SECONDED THE MOTION, WHICH CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY ON ROLL CALL. ,~" IT WAS MOVED BY MR. SABATH.
