01-28-29 Regular99 COLrn?CIL ROOTv1 January 28th, 1929. The Council met in regular session at 7:30 P. T., the Mayor and the follovring members of the Council were present: i`r. Keen, Talr. Porter, i,r. Smith and T:Zr. Troup. Owing to the absence of the president, tlrs. 6irarfield, P.x. Troup eras on motion duly made, seconded and carried ele~eted president pro tem to preside at this meeting. 11^he minutes of previous meetings were read and after correcting approved. i~:Ir. Smith reported on the following natters :rhich had been referred to his co~~ ittee. The purchase of twenty traffic signs to be placed at different points in the City. That the matter of replacing the top on the water tank would be completed within the next few days. Mr. Smith also reported that in the matter of repairing the sewer South of Atlantic Avenue tiie sewer at the point where the trouble was located was found to be some ten feet under ground and that it was necessary to purchase a root cutting mach- ine in order to r~.move the obstructions. _ A co_rv7iunication was read from I~rs. Annie ?,. Rice and ordered filed. A night telegram eras read from L. K. ;°lagner, manager for Lottie Schoemmell, requesting an engagement for swi~ilning exhib- tion's. This vras also ordered filed. The motion was seconded by T:Ir. Porter and unanimously carried. In the matter of a request for two additional lights on the public school grounds was on motion duly made, seconded and carried referred to the Light Conunittee. 10~ Council Room - January 28th, 1929. Dr, J. R. Cason then appeared before the Council in reference to laying a sidewalk around the iaethodist church property on the corner of the Federal Highvaay and n?. E. First Street. He requested that the City do the grading for the sidewalk without charge. It was moved by ir. Porter, seconded by nlr. Keen and carried that the City do this grading gratis as requested. It was moved by S+Tr. Porter, seconded by Trir. Keen and un- animouslg carried that the action of the i44ayor in purchasing the securities held by the City against the Ocean City Bank for the sum of ~p50,000.00 be ratified and approved. It was moved, seconded and carried that current bil_~s be referred to the Finance Committee. Iur. Roy Friedlander appeared before the Council and re- quested a permit to install a gasoline tank on Southeast Second Avenue near Atlantic Avenue. 13e stated that should his permit be granted and it was found that a station at this point tiaras objectionable that he would remove the same. It tivas moved by fir. Porter, seconded by ivir. Keen and carried that the matter be referred to the Street Committee with power to act. °. ; Current bills having been audited by the Finance committee were on motion duly made, seconded and carried referred balk to the Council and ordered paid. P.4r. J. B. L'Engle, an attorney, and L. C. Forhman, the chief engineer, representing the Florida East Coast Railway Com- 'x pany appeared before the Council and protested construction of a street crossing on Northeast First Street. They presented various reasons, chiefly among vrhich was the creating of a hazard :> and the large expense entailed. The matter was discussed at con- siderable length by members of the Council and property owners. DTo action was taken. Shields and others appeared before the Council and protested the cost, on the grounds that the contractor had stated iierbally that the cost would not exceed '25.00 per fifty foot lot. iUir. Smith then made the following motion amending the ' assessment against the following lots for the reason. that said lots vaere situated on such an angle that it made the assessments excessive and that the City bear one-third of the cost of the assessment as fixed by the engineer: Lots 1 and 48 in Block 1
