T REMEMBRANCES OF EARLY DELRAY Life at 312 North Swinton Avenue in 1921/22 As one who spent her childhood in early Delray before it became Delray Beach, I witnessed much of the life of the tiny village it was in 1921. The town had been a recognizable community for little more than 15 years when I first saw it. Growth had been slow since the town had suffered reverses because of agricultural prob- lems. The weather had not been kind to the crops which were principally pineapples, peppers, and beans. Winter vegetable sales to northern markets were also quite slow. My father, J.Frank Benedict, widowed in 1919, came to Florida from Connecticut with us, three little semi-orphans, by a method no longer available; a coastal steam- er. We settled for a short time in the small town of Miami. Finding business prospects poor there, he looked about for a more promising area, finding it in Delray where he entered the real estate business. We were happy as any children would be to be moving to a truly rural village of 1500 people. My father found a tiny cottage on the western edge of town which he could afford to rent. It cost $25 a month. This house is still standing at 312 North Swinton Avenue next to the Cason Baptist Church. A large addition was attached to the rear around 1965. Amazingly, one of the Sperry family members, the former owners of this house, was recently in Delray Beach and went to see the place he had left nearly 90 years ago. We girls slept in the unfinished attic since we were short of bedrooms. How we stood the heat under the tin roof I cannot imagine. Air conditioning was several years in the future. We were too young, all being less than eleven, to realize that we were poor. The house stood in the midst of a 22 acre citrus grove. long aban- doned. As old as the grove might have been, it supplied us with 100 trees to climb, an unused fruit packing house to play in and all the oranges, grapefruit, lemons limes, guavas, mangoes, kumquats, loquats, and dates we could eat. We girls ran a roadside business, selling grapefruit and mangoes for the great sum of a penny apiece. And all this for $25 a month! School was only two blocks south on dusty, unpaved Swinton Avenue. The re- stored building still stands there today and is the centerpiece of Old School Square. In those informal times, boys would slip to the ground through the open first-floor windows, run across the fields and return with hands and pockets bulging with fruit from the nearby groves. Some of these small truants grew up to become the leading citizens of Delray Beach. Among them I remember Jack Saunders, Pete Sundy, Jimmie Love, and O.D.Priest. Many of these childhood friendships lasted for decades. Jimmie Love's sister Mary and I remained in touch until her untimely death about 1967. There were few houses near us on Swinton Avenue. I remember homes of the Loves, Casons, Schraders, Shabingers, Saunders, Neals, and Sundys. A few of these homes still survive. Dr. Cason's home was moved to First Street to become the Cason Cottage of the Delray Beach Historical Society. Not only was Swinton Avenue unpaved but in all the rest of the town there was not one paved street. Some coral rock was spread about to make the sandy lanes passable. A few wooden sidewalks were built in the business center of town but such luxuries never came west of the Florida East Coast Railroad tracks. The road to the beach was a sandy track, really just a primitive extension of Atlantic Avenue. Every Thursday, the whole business community followed Southern custom and closed at noon. My father closed his office and took all of us down that sandy trail to the point where the chain ferry crossed what is now the Intracoastal Water- way. We pulled on the chain which was attached at either side of the canal and' soon were on our way through the woods to the usually deserted beach. Beautiful, crystal clear water and clean sand were all ours! My father, a great mixer, had lived in Miami for a year before moving to Delray and soon had as many friends in this new home as he had in the former one. Having a superior voice, he sang in a few church choirs and appeared in local entertainments. He joined the Board of Trade (now known as the Chamber of Commerce). He was asked to be President of the Tourist Club, formed to attract new people to Delray. He helped to establish the local Lions Club and became its Secretary and Treasurer. To conduct his business, he shared office space with the City Clerk. For this, he paid the city $5 a month. His real estate sales and management projects were beginning to prosper. In short, he was on his way to . becoming a leading citizen in his new home. Sadly, it was not to be. On the morning of July 27, 1922, he drove to his office, his head filled with worrisome family problems and facing the day's work. In his preoccupied state, he failed to notice a slowly-moving and late-arriving freight train close to the unguarded Atlantic Avenue crossing. Too late he tried to turn aside but was struck and mortally wounded. So much time passed while he was being pried from the wreckage and driven to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach in the only available vehicle, a delivery truck, that he lived only a few hours. Doctor Cason was on the scene almost at once and did all he could but even the hospital could not cope with such massive injuries, using all the medical skill available in that day. It is still a disturbing memory that we were unable to see him again, if only to say goodbye. A few days after the tragedy, my two sisters, my grandma, and I got on the train which had destroyed our hopes for a good life in Delray. We travelled back to Connecticut to live with relatives. Mrs. Love packed us a lunch so large it lasted for the entire trip. What a kind person she was and is still remembered for her charity that day. It was forty long years before I returned to Delray but there stood the little house on Swinton Avenue, apparently unchanged from the time I lived in it. Nina Wilcox Putnam, a famous author of the 1920/1940 era had bought the place when we left it. Most recently, it was owned by a Mrs Roberts. There it remains, a piece of solidly-constructed Delray history, looking better than ever. Each time I pass it I feel a twinge at the memories of all that happened to me there when, unknow- ingly, I was a part of the town's early history. Elizabeth (Mrs.W.C.) F REMEMBRANCES OF EARLY DELRAY Life at 312 North Swinton Avenue in 1921/22 As one who spent her childhood in early Delray before it became Delray Beach, I witnessed much of the life of the tiny village it was in 1921. We pulled on the chain which was attached at either side of the canal and. soon were on our way through the woods to the usually deserted beach. It is still a disturbing memory that we were unable to see him again, if only to say: goodbye. Elizabeth (Mrs.W.C.)
