Please feel free to relay to Carolyn. 49 Palm Square is located in the Marina Historic District of Delray Beach. Built over three lots(64,65 and part of 66)the property reflects the"Village by the Sea"of early Delray. The home was built in 1934 as a vacation cottage. The materials used were Dade County pine for the flooring, Florida Cypress for the structure and red brick for the fireplace.The home was the center for the social events that characterized the Delray of the 30's and 40's. The current owner(the Smith family) purchased the property from Mr. E. Pulver Cook in 1976. Mr. cook was a botanist and loved the trees and plants that surround the garden. Mr. Cook turned down several offers over the years until he found a buyer willing to protect his precious trees. With the promise made Mr. Cook passed away the next day. To date the only tree felled came from the winds of Wilma. The loss of the massive Ficus tree did provide a location for the current vegetable garden. It is hoped that Mr. Cook would approve. In addition to the trees and flowers Mr. Cook loved birds particularly the Cardinals. A few little pairs still visit the property today. The home is essentially the same as it was in 1934. A major addition in 1995 was the spa that pours water into a fifty foot swimming pool (constructed without harm to any of the trees). Consistent with the characterization"Marina Historic District" it should be noted the Smith family moved from the yacht Mother Goose that was docked at the City Marina in 1976. Four Smith children that grew up at 49 Palm Square evidence being the ladder steps disappearing into the leafy ramparts of the Banyan tree at the rear of the property.
