Building known as The Presidential was designed for Mr. R.C. Lawson by well known architect Henry Pope and was completed in 1940. It is a good example of commercial development in the Art Moderne style. It consists of stores on the ground floor and 6 rental apartments on the second floor. The original 6 over 6 wood double hung windows remain wand-well as the original balconies. The site was originally occupied by the 1926 shingled building which is just to the south on S.E. 7th Avenue. Constructed in 1940, the building was designed in the Art Moderne style by well known Delray architect, Henry Pope, of the firm of Pope and Blake. Known as the "Presidential Building" when constructed, the structure retains most of its original architectural design elements. This proposal concerns the eastern one third of the building, the western two thirds is occupied by Durango's Attic. The renovation of the front facade consists of the following: • Removal of the center structural column between the existing door and the window to the east and the installation of double glass and aluminum entrance doors. • The existing show windows will be removed and enlarged. The plan indicates that the windows will be 1' above the sidewalk; the existing windows are 2' above the sidewalk. The windows are to be framed in aluminum. • A red canvas bubble style awning will be installed over the windows and doors and 4 decorative light fixtures will be installed. • The building is to be painted beige, similar to the existing color. The original doors are no longer in place, and as the Board did not specify what type of doors are to be used, staff recommends that several appropriate choices be submitted for consideration. 3. She pointed out that this is the fourth request she has made for this and it still has not been done. B. Board Members Mr. Johnson ask that staff check the approved plans for the Check Cashing Store to see if the Board had approved the exterior lighting under the eyebrow of the building. As he did not recall seeing this on the plans during the approval process. Mr. Johnson noted that Old School Square.has installed exterior light fixtures interior to the site and inquired if they were on the approved site plan.
