CONTRIBUTING BUILDING, MARINA HISTORIC DISTRICT RENOVATION OF EXISTING SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE. NEW CONSTRUCTION TO ACCOMMODATE THE ADDITION OF A SECOND STORY AND ATTACHED 4 CAR GARAGE. BACKGROUND This item was on the HPB agenda for September 1, 1993. The applicant was not present for the meeting. However, the staff report recommended approval as presented, and the Building Department had determined that the project met all of its development standards, therefor staff suggested that the Board proceed with the hearing, providing the Board had no adverse comments or aesthetic concerns . The Board had comments regarding the placement of the cupola on the garage roof and certain aspects of the east elevation. It was felt that 4 different window styles and a French door on the south portion of the east ( Intracoastal Waterway) facade were incompatible. Also, the placement and scale of the openings lacked harmony and detracted from the character of the house from the waterway. As it was inappropriate to continue the hearing without the presence of the applicant, the Board postponed the review. INFORMATION REQUESTED BY THE BOARD Past HPB action with respect to Intracoastal Waterway COA's The Board asked for information with respect to HPB action taken on other structures abutting the Intracoastal. Five such COA' s have come to the Board for review, all were approved but only three have been constructed. East elevations of the five COA' s are attached for the Board's consideration. Atlantic Avenue Marina Historic District Ron Branscombe, Owner ITEM BEFORE THE BOARD The action requested of the board is that of approving a free standing sign to be located at the entrance to the parking lot associated with the Boyd Building and Busch's Restaurant. The entrance to the parking lot is located on the east side of Palm Square. BACKGROUND Busch' s Restaurant is located in the historic Boyd Building, on the southwest corner of E. Atlantic Avenue and the Intracoastal Waterway. The parking lot is accessed from Palm Square. There is an existing directional sign to the parking lot which will be replaced with the sign which is being reviewed. Initially, Busch' s Restaurant was located on the east side of AlA in Ocean Ridge. The proposed sign is the original "nostalgic" sign which was a landmark in the days before major development along that portion of AlA. The applicant was able to salvage the sign before the original restaurant building was demolished and is proposing to restore it and install it at the entrance to the parking lot. ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT This is a double faced sheet metal sign; the sign face is approximately 5 ' x 6 ' . The text and design will be restored and unchanged; the background is white, text is blue, lobster is red and the boarder is blue. The sign is free standing with a white aluminum frame and will not be illuminated, the top of the frame will be 7 ' from the ground. The sign will replace the existing directional sign, at the same location. The sign and its location have been approved by the Building Department' s sign review committee and the Engineering Department. zEg.4"ow).6.,13 F.32_46.Ae...6(4frkimdaseosz...)-- . _} - . — f---- ---- PLUIvtiN LAM.Q.ri 0 .5 r4A4.___-- -\.:•' SEAFOOD .. .x.i -r-ot.)ci- 1-kea..r merr,c_ . 4-klex., I , RESTAURANT ,--.... \ 5... . i'' is —.. • .'••,,, .0'' • x — 1'SERVING DINNER / 1,\'• • II .\- COCKTAILS V SIGN REVIEW (4'.
