PROCLAMATION
LITW IF DELRE BERLH
WHEREAS,the origin of Presidents'Day lies in the 1880s,when the birthday of
George Washington-commander of the Continental Army during the American
Revolution and the first president of the United States-was first celebrated as a federal
holiday;and
WHEREAS,in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill,which
moved a number of federal holidays to Mondays.;and
WHEREAS,it was proposed that Washington's Birthday be renamed Presidents'
Day to honor the birthdays of both George Washington (February 22)and Abraham
Lincoln (February 12);and
WHEREAS,following much discussion,Congress initially rejected the name
change,but after the bill went into effect in 1971,Presidents'Day became the commonly
accepted name;and
WHEREAS,Presidents'Day is usually marked by public ceremonies in
Washington,D.C.,and throughout the country.
NOW,THEREFORE,I,Shelly Petrolia,Mayor of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida,on behalf of the City Commission do hereby proclaim February 17,2020 as:
PRESIDENT'S DA Y
in the City of Delray Beach,Florida,and encourage all citizens,officials and employees
to remember the contributions made by all president's in this country.
