PURPOSE
The purpose of this directive is to explain and give a general overview of death benefits applicable to Police
Officers and Firefighters employed by the City of Delray Beach.The complete description of benefits
specifically discussed in this policy,and all other associated benefits,such as health insurance premium
and educational expense reimbursements,must be obtained from the actual insurance policies,State
Statute 112.19 (Law Enforcement)or 112.191 (Firefighters),or the Federal law 28 CFR,Part 32
Public Safety Officers Death Benefits Act.
POLICY
A.Group Life Insurance
The City provides group life insurance benefits as follows:
1.A $50,000 life insurance benefit payable as the result of death from any cause.This applies to all
regular full-time employees who are members of the P.B.A and I.AF.F.Bargaining Units up to and
including Police Sergeants,and up to and including Fire Lieutenants.Additionally,the insurance
policy would pay another $50,000 for accidental death.
2.All other sworn officers in ranks above those listed in the preceding paragraph A.1.,have life
insurance in the amount of either$100,000 or$75,000,depending on an annual earnings of more,
or equal or less than $75,000,respectfully,which is paid as the result of death from any cause.
Additionally,the insurance policy would pay an additional same amount for accidental death.
B.Special Risk Accident Insurance
The City provides the following insurance pursuant to State Statute Sections 112.19 and 112.191:
1.The sum of $75,000 shall be paid if the police officer or firefighter is accidentally killed or receives
injuries that result in their death while engaged in the performance of their duties.This benefit shall
not be paid if the death is a suicide or the bodily injury that results in death was intentionally self-
inflected.
2.The sum of $75,000 shall be paid if the police officer is accidentally killed as specified in paragraph
(1),and the accidental death occurs as a result of the officer's response to fresh pursuit or what the
officer reasonably believes to be an emergency or at the scene of a traffic accident or while
enforcing traffic law.Likewise,the sum of $75,000 shall be paid if the firefighter is accidentally killed
as specified in paragraph (1 ),and the accidental death occurs as a result of the firefighter's

response to what is reasonably believed to be an emergency involving the protection of life or
property.These sums shall be in addition to any sum provide for in paragraph (1).
3.If a police officer or firefighter,while engaged in the performance of their duties,is unlawfully and
intentionally killed,or dies as a result of a fire which has been determined to have been caused by
an act of arson,or subsequently dies from injuries sustained there from or some unlawful and
intentional act,the sum of $225,000 shall be paid.
C.Workers'Compensation death benefits would apply per Florida Statutes.
D.Pension Plan death benefits would apply per the respective pension plan contracts.
E.Federal Death Benefits:The City will abide by current Federal regulations for Public Safety Officers
Death Benefits Act.
