The purpose of this policy is to establish a procedure for a uniform set of guidelines for the provision and
use of personal protective equipment (PPE).It is the City's intent to provide its employees with PPE as
required in safety performing routine operations.
POLICY
Because of the significance and importance placed on the safety of city employees,it is imperative that all
PPE is worn, and safety rules are followed. Therefore, the use if PPE is in effect for all employees that are
exposed to hazardous areas or conditions as indicated by normal safety procedures.PPE is intended
solely to protect the life and well-being of the employees.
The PPE listed in Attachment A is intended as a minimum for that necessary to conduct routine job tasks
safely. At the discretion of the department management and our Safety Coordinator, additional PPE maybe
required.Budgeting for PPE will be the responsibility of each department so affected.
PROCEDURE
A.Responsibilities and Requirements
Department and division heads, superintendents, foremen and crew leaders or supervisors,as well as the
employees, are hereby held responsible for the administration of this policy.Observed violations in the
non-use of PPE may,at the discretion of the department management, result in disciplinary action being
taken against not only the employee but the supervisor as permitted by either City policy or union contracts.
Any employee not having available his/her PPE that was issued or who fails to use PPE or is otherwise not
following safety rules will be immediately removed by the supervisor from that task, and at the discretion of
the supervisor be reassigned to another task for the remainder of the shift or while PPE is unavailable.
Departments shall document rules and regulations concerning specific situations, training and use of PPE.
For everyone's safety, compliance is essential and requires all employees to cooperate.

B.Safety Shoes
The City provides toe-reinforced safety shoes to workers whose duties might subject them to foot injuries.
The shoes will be replaced at the City's expense initially, and at least once a year,or more often,if in the
department's head's opinion, the shoes were damaged beyond wearability on the job.The employee must
turn in the old shoes in order to qualify for a replacement pair. The use of safety shoes is set at the
departmental level. Each employee receiving the shoes will be required to sign the "Safety Shoe
Agreement"(Attachment B)copies of which will be available in the applicable departments.
