PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish the proper guidelines for inspection of an employee's locker, desk,
office and work area. This does not apply to an employee's personal briefcase or handbag.
POLICY
A. All lockers, desks, offices and work areas are subject to inspection by Department Heads or
Supervisors where there is reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will expose work
related misconduct or if the search is necessary for a non -investigatory work related purpose and
the scope of the inspection is related to the purpose of the inspection.
B. An employee shall not be permitted to use their own locks or keys, that is locks or keys not furnished
by the City, on any of the above listed items.
C. If any illegal narcotics or substances thought to be illegal narcotics are discovered, then the police
department shall maintain possession and test the substance to determine its makeup.
D. Any inspection conducted shall be done in the presence of the employee or a union representative,
if feasible. Such inspections shall be conducted with as much privacy as possible.
