PURPOSE
The purpose of an internship is to meet the organizational needs of the City of Delray Beach while providing
for the needs of the student intern.Interns make a short-term commitment to work at the City of Delray
Beach in order to achieve learning goals and gain experience and exposure to their field of interest.The
City of Delray Beach commits to providing the intern with a learning experience,specific work assignments,
and training.
POLICY
Student internships with the City of Delray Beach may be paid or unpaid.A college or university may
require an internship be unpaid in order for the student to earn college credit.If the college or university
has no such requirement,the student intern will be paid a stipend as determined by the pay plan currently
in effect.
Paid interns may not work more than 29 hours per week and will be classified as part-time,temporary
employees.
PROCEDURE
A Departments interested in participating in the internship program will offer a career-focused
experience that enhances academic learning.Work such as data entry,filing,answering phones,
etc.is appropriate for internship experiences only when balanced with meaningful professional
responsibilities and hands-on experience.
B.The department,with assistance from Human Resources,will compose a job description that clearly
defines the learning goals and job duties for the internship.Components of the job description
should include position title,skills and qualifications required,preferred college majors,duties and
responsibilities,hours per week and the start and end dates of the internship.
C.Human Resources will post the internship on NeoGov and other appropriate college and university
job boards.City of Delray Beach social media accounts may also be used to advertise internships.
D.The department head or designee will interview the applicants and select the candidate best
qualified for the position.Verification of employment eligibility,pre-employment drug testing and
background checks,if applicable,will be conducted by Human Resources.

E.Once the applicant has been approved by Human Resources,the Employee Appointment Form will
be completed by the department and submitted to Human Resources.
F.The department head will appoint someone to act as a mentor/supervisor during the internship.The
mentor must have the time and ability to oversee the intern's performance and offer constructive
feedback.The intern will attend a general orientation session with Human Resources;the mentor
will provide a departmental orientation.
G.The mentor will complete a learning agreement provided by the intern's school.If one is not
provided,the mentor will use the Internship Agreement available from Human Resources.The
signed job description and learning agreement will be submitted to Human Resources for
processing.
H.Interns must abide by Palm Beach County Code of Ethics and all applicable City of Delray Beach
policies and safety requirements.Violations of the policies could result in termination.
I.The mentor should provide the intern with ongoing feedback and conduct periodic performance
evaluations as required by the student's school.If the school does not provide a form,the mentor
will use the Employer Evaluation available from Human Resources.The department will forward
all evaluations to Human Resources.
Benefits:
Interns are not eligible to participate in any City of Delray Beach benefit programs.
Workers Compensation:
Interns are covered by the City's workers'compensation policy.All on-the-job injuries must be reported to
the supervisor according to the City of Delray Beach Administrative Policy RM-10.
