A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
DELRA¥ BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE PASSAGE. BY THE
UNITED STATES CONGRESS OF H.R. 2978, A BILL AMENDING
SECTION 700 OF TITLE 18, UNITED STATES CODE, TO BE
KNOWN AS THE "FLAG PROTECTION ACT OF 1989", WHICH
S...qALL PROTECT ?HE PHYSICAL INTEGRITY OF THE FLAG OF
THE L.~I TED STATES OF AMERI CA; AUTHORIZING AND
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO PROVIDE COPIES OF THIS
RESOLUTION; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City Co,~-ission of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida, on behalf of the residents and citizens of the City of Delray
Beach, Florida, is concerned and disturbed by the recent ruling of the
United States Supreme Court which might allow persons to mutilate,
deface, burn, or trample upon the flag of the United States of America;
and,
WHEREAS, the United States Congress is currently considering
the adoption of H.R. 2978, to be known as the "Flag Protection Act of
1989", which shall protect the physical integrity of the United States
flag; and,
WHEREAS, hhe City Commission of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida believes that the United States flag is the symbol of our nation
and people should be. so protected; and,
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida, wishes to support H.R. 2978 and urge its passage by the
Congress.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City Commission of the City of Delray
Beach, Florida, does hereby support and urge the passage of H.R. 2978 by
the United States Congress in order to preserve the physical integrity
of the symbol of our nation, the United States flag.
Section 2. That the City Clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to furnish copies of this Resolution to members of the United
States Congress, and to representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
and all other appropriate civic organizations, groups, and agencies.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its passage.
