A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DELRAY
BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF PALM BEACH
JUNIOR COLLEGE IN SEEKING THE PASSAGE OF A BILL BY THE
FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO GIVE PERMISSION ALLOWING PALM
BEACH JUNIOR COLLEGE TO SEEK PERMISSION FROM THE
VOTERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY TO LEVY A FIVE-YEAR
HALF-MIL TAX FOR PALM BEACH JUNIOR COLLEGE; PROVIDING
FOR COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION.
WHEREAS, Palm Beach Junior College has been a vital part of our community
for more than fifty years; and,
WHEREAS, Palm Beach Junior College has provided and continues to provide
quality education at a reasonable cost for citizens of all ages; and,
WHEREAS, the training of our policemen, firemen, dental hygienists,
paramedics, nurses and many others vital to community interests is entirely dependent
upon Palm Beach Junior College; and,
WHEREAS, State funding for buildings and equipment is inadequate to meet
the community college's demands; and,
WHEREAS, Palm Beach Junior College, South, which serves over six thousand
students each year and has been in existence for twelve years, still has no permanent
buildings and lacks the high tech laboratories it needs to adequately serve the industry
of the area; and,
WHEREAS, there is no local tax base for funding community colleges; and,
WHEREAS, a continuation of these problems will inevitably lead either to a
decline in the quality of education offered, or to a reduction in axrailability of
community college education to all citizens; and,
WHEREAS, Palm Beach Junior College is seeking support of local governments
in its efforts to get permission from the Florida Legislature to allow the college to ask
the voters of Palm Beach County to vote for a five-year half-mil levy to Palm Beach
Junior College.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Delray Beach, Florida, does
hereby support the efforts of Palm Beach Junior College in seeking permission from the
Florida Legislature for a bill allowing the college to seek approval by the voters of Palm
Beach County for a five-year half-mil levy for Palm Beach Junior College.
Section 2. That the City Clerk of the City of Delray Beach, Florida, is
hereby authorized and directed to provide copies of this Resolution to all members of
the Palm Beach County Local Le.~islative Delegation, Representatives of Palm Beach
Junior College, and all other appropriate public agencies and individuals.
