A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
D ELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, ENCOURAGING THE FLORIDA
LEGISLATURE TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE PROBLEM OF YOUTH
UNEMPLOYMENT AND PASS LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH A
MEANINGFUL YOUTH TARGETED WORK PROGRAM; AND
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO FURNISH COPIES.
WHEREAS, high youth unemployment is directly related to high
youth crime; and,
WHEREAS, youth unemployment and youth crime represents a
significant and severe problem in the Cities of Florida; and,
WREREAS, the causes of severe youth unemployment include
industrial and technological changes which generate fewer entry level
jobs; and,
WHEREAS, many of our young citizens are not adequately
prepared to cope with the skills and attitudes required in the
workplace; and,
WHEREAS, there has been and continues to be a reduction of
federal programs designed to retain, educate and provide incentives for
long term employment in the private sector; and,
WHEREAS, we as the City Council of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida share the conviction that young people represent a vastly
underused resource and innovative efforts are needed to establish new
employment and education opportunities for suck persons;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY TR}:: CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
~ The City Council of the City of Delray Beach,
Florida, strongly encourages the Florida Legislature to recognize and be
sensitive to the severe problems of youth unemployment to consider and
adopt remedial legislation designed to establish a meaningful
youth-targeted work program, such as a Florida Youth Corps, that will
help qualify participating youths for employment in the competitive
marketplace.
~ That the City Clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to furnish a copy of this Resolution to members of the Florida
Legislature.
