RESOLUTION NO. 103-80
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DELRAY
BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO
FINANCE THE EXPANSION OF THE NAVAL AND COAST GUARD FACI-
LITIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA.
WHEREAS, the peninsula of.the State of Florida is a gateway to
the Caribbean; and,
WHEREAS, many places in the Caribbean area are in political and
economic turmoil; and,
WHEREAS, due to the aforementioned conditions, Florida is one of
the main entry points for legal and illegal aliens; and,
WHEREAS, Florida is one of the main entry points for illegal drug
trafficking; and,
WHEREAS, Cuba has missiles and troops positioned only ninety (90)
miles from our shores,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the U.S. Coast Guard facilities, located in Palm
Beach County, be expanded to provide more ships to patrol our coastal
waters.
Section 2. That a detachment of U.S. Navy warships and support
vessels be home ported in Port Everglades, Florida.
Section 3. That the Key West Naval Station be reactivated to
protect South Florida (home port for ships, missile sites, marines, etc.).
Section 4. That due to South Florida being a key strategic area
of our nation and due to the fact that it is paramount that we have the
defensive capabilities to protect our Southern flank, the United States
Government take whatever steps necessary, including additional air service
to protect our Southern flank and to keep the sea lanes open.
Section 5. That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the
appropriate Federal, State and Local officers and agencies.
PASSED AND ADOPTED in regular session on this the 28th day of
October, 1980.
