A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, PROPOSING THAT TWO
BICYCLE PATHS BE INCORPORATED INTO THE CON-
STRUCTION OF THE LINTON BRIDGE.
WHEREAS, bicycle transportation should be encouraged as part of
our energy conservation program and for the physical well-being of
our residents; and,
WHEREAS, the plans for the Linton Bridge provide for two roadways
across the bridge to be divided into three lanes of 12 feet, 12 feet
and 11 feet 9 inches, with rail sidewalks 5 feet 1 inch wide, and a
9 inch curb; and,
WHEREAS, at the present time there is no need for more than a
total of four lanes over the bridge; and,
WHEREAS, it is desirable to adequately provide for the safety
of pedestrians and bicycle riders; and,
WHEREAS, the desired objectives could be accomplished by restrict-
ing auto traffic on both sides of the bridge to two lanes and providing
in place of the third lane nearest the sidewalk a bicycle path 7% feet
wide which could be separated from the auto lanes by a separation strip
6 inches high, bolted onto the mesh, as well as the concrete portion
of the bridge approaching the lift, and separated from the sidewalk
by the 9 inch curb presently shown on the plans for the bridge; and,
WHEREAS, if in the future a third lane on each side of the bridge
were required for automobile traffic, the bicycle path separation strip
could easily be unbolted and removed,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City Council on behalf of the City of Delray
Beach, Florida, and the citizens of the City, hereby proposes that two
bicycle paths be incorporated into the construction of the Llnton Bridge
by reducing for the present the three automobile lanes on each side of
the bridge to two, and using 7~ feet of the third lane nearest the side-
walk as a bicycle path to be separated from the auto lanes by a raised
strip 6 inches high bolted to both the mesh and concrete portions of the
bridge.
Section 2. That the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a
copy of this resolution to the Department of Transportation of the State
of Florida, the County Commission and County Engineer, and such other
public officials as may be deemed to be appropriate.
