M~ORANDUM
To: City Manager
From: Director Public Works
Subject: Negotiation for Purchase of Asphalt
During the last 4 years the City has negotiated with Dixie Asphalt Co. of West
Palm Beach for asphalt resurfacing of selected streets in lieu of soliciting bids.
In every instance the City has obtained a cheaper price per ton than any other City
in the area even though ~he material was trucked a longer distance from the mixing
plants.
Last year the City paid $ 9.80 per ton with the understanding that the ensuing year
there would be a price increase.
Recently discussions were conducted with Dixie Asphalt and a price of $ 10.45 per
ton was agreed on contingent upon them doing the work when they desire and not
necessarily all at one time but with the assurance that the work would be completed
by July 1, 1973. This price is more reasonable than it would normally be if bids
were submitted as evidenced by the contract which Rubin Construction Company has
with Palm Beach County at $ 11.50 per ton and Dixie Asphalt Company with the City
of Lake Worth at $ 10.90 per ton.
It is proposed to resurface the following streets, funds which are available in
the current budget:
1. N.E. 3rd Ave. from N.E. 8th St. to NoEo 14th St.
2° Jaeger Drive in Tropic Palms from Curlew Drive to north end of the street°
3° Heron Drive in Tropic Palms from Curlew Drive to Jaeger Drive,
4. Albatross Road in Tropic Palms from Jaeger Drive to Curlew Road°
Total tons of Asphalt will be approximately 940 at a cost of $ 9,823°00.
It is recommended that only the price of $ 10o45 per ton be accepted without a
limitation as to amount of asphalt in case other street resurfacing becomes
necessary later during, the current year.
