A RESOLUTION OF THE .CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, REQUESTING
AMTRAK TO HAVE THE "FLORIDA SPECIAL" OPER-
ATED BY THE SEABOARD COAST LINE RAILROAD
CONTINUE TO STOP AT DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA.
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the city Council of
Delray Beach, Florida, that the "Florida Special", a crack tourist
train operated by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad during the tour-
ist season, will not stop at Delray Beach, Florida, commencing
December 17, 1971; and
WHEREAS, the "Florida Special" has stopped in the city of Delray
Beach continuously since its inception; and
WHEREAS, the City of Delray Beach has grown in population and
will at least double the present number within the next ten years;
and
WHEREAS, the Delray Beach Seaboard Station is 19th in passenger
volume of 300 stations; and
WHEREAS, the Delray Beach Seaboard Station has the largest pas-
senger volume station between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale;
and
WHEREAS, Delray Beach users of the "Florida Special" will have
to travel 20 miles to West Palm Beach or 14 miles to Deerfield Beach;
and
WHEREAS, vehicular traffic is of grave concern along this entire
area as transportation committees for Palm Beach County and Broward
County and another committee for Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties
are active for the purpose of finding a solution to traffic congestion;
and
WHEREAS, the Delray Beach Seaboard Station is the most modern and
up-to-date station between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale; and
WHEREAS, the Delray Beach City Beautification Committee has been
active in beautifying the Delray Beach Seaboard Station to make it
even more attractive;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, that:
1. Amtrak is requested to reinstate Delray Beach, Florida, as a
regular stop for the "Florida Special" operated by the Seaboard Coast
Line Railroad commencing December 17, 1971; and
2. A copy of this resolution shall be provided by the city Manager
to Senators Gurney and Chiles, and Congressman Rogers.
PASSED and ADOPTED in special session on this the 24th day of
November, 1971.
