Res 26-69 RESOLUTION NO. 26-69. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, CONCERN- ING PROPOSED MINING OF LAKE OKEECHOBEE FOR CALCITE LIMESTONE. WHEREAS, the water level of WELLS supplying the Water demand for the City of Delray Beach, Florida, is governed by the waters of Lake Okeechobee and the South Florida Flood Control District, and WHEREAS, many citizens of the City of Delray Beach, Florida, fish, have cottages or trailers, and hunt in and around Lake Okeechobee, and WHEREAS, many tourists staying in the City of Delray Beach, Florida, fish and hunt in and around Lake Okeechobee, and WHEREAS, the farmers, cattle raisers and flower growers in and around the City of Delray Beach, depend on the water arriving from Lake Okeechobee, and WHEREAS, Lake Okeechobee is a stopping place and in some cases, a wintering place for many migrating wild fowl, and WHEREAS, the Okeechobee cat fish is recognized as a delicacy and industry in this area, and WHEREAS, the citizens of this area want the exploi- tation of natural resources stopped so that they may be enjoy- ed today and will be preserved for future generations, and WHEREAS, the proposed mining operation in Lake Okeechobee by Coastal Petroleum Co. will cause water polution, loss of fish, loss of wild fowl, open the door for further exploitation of natural resources, destroy nature's beauty, disrupt water plans for cities, farmers and conservation areas, reduce tourism, create additional water level control problems on Lake Okeechobee, and WHEREAS, the proposed mining operation in Lake Okeechobee by Coastal Petroleum Co. will not reimburse the people for the loss of natural resources and the nation's security will not be impaired if the proposed mining opera- .~. tion is not permitted, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Delray Beach, Florida, that no mining operation shall be allowed in Lake Okeechobee, Florida.
