Res 1436-63 RESOLUTION NO. 1436 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF T~E CITY OF DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA URGING THE PALM BEACH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION TO CONSIDER STEPS TO AL- LEVIATE THE OVER-TAXED S~HOOL FACILITIES IN THE GREATER DELRAY BEACH AREA. WHEREAS, the Greater Delray Beach Area is on the thresh- old of a significant l~opulation boom~ and W~EREAS, the City Council realizes that recent popula- tion gains have already over-taxed the educational facilities of this area~ and W~EREAS, a complete "plant survey" of every school in Palm Beach County is planned from March 4 - 8 by a 28 man inspec- tion team to determine what additions and new buildings will be necessary to meet the county's growth in the next five years~ and ~LEREAS, the City Council feels that there is presently a critical need for the expansion of the educational facilities of the Greater Delray Beach Area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS= 1. That the Palm Beach County Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction acquaint the aforesaid inspection team with the critical need for the expansion of educa- tional facilities in the Greater Delray Beach Area. 2. That said Board and the Superintendent of Public Instruction should call to the attention of the inspection team the following minimum improvements for Seacrest High School= a. A new cafeteria. b. An expanded library. c. An expanded industrial arts area. d. A choral music room. e. An art building. f. An expanded a~inistrative wing to provide additional office space and storage. Page 2. Resolution No. 1436. g. An expanded lounge for teachers. h. Improvements to the g~nasi~ including removable bleachers and two enlarged dressing rooms. i. Book locker rooms. j. Six new teaching classrooms. 3. That the Board and the Superintendent of Public Instruction should inform the inspection te~ of the urgent need for a technical school to serve both the white md negro population of the Greater Delray Beach Area. A tremendously high percentage of the local students are terminal education students at the ~elfth grade, and it is believed that such a program would greatly aid the South Palm Beach County area in meeting the demands of tourism and industry. 4. That the Board and the Superintendent of P~lic Instruction should acquaint the inspection te~ with the desirabi- lity of replacing the elementary school at the intersection of Atlantic md ~inton Avenues with a new facility to be located in the southern section of the City. 5. That the Board and the Superintendent of Public Instruction should call attention to the inspection te~ of the need for an elementary school located in the area between the corporate limits of the City and Military Trail, and another loca- ted in the Western section of tM City to alleviate the crowed condition of Spady Elementary School. 6. That the Board and the Superintendent of Public Instruction should advise the inspection team of the critical need for a junior hi~ school to serve as preparatory school for Carver High School.
